3/21/1976The Indian people have delivered a stinging rebuke to the woman who had ruled them without the benefit of a constitution for the past 19 months by dumping her from office in a landslide election. After 11 years of rule, Indira Gandhi has resigned, and in an uncharacteristically humble statement said she ""accepted the verdict unreservedly"" and promised ""constructive cooperation"" with the new government. The heads of the victorious parties immediately dropped the year-and-a-half-old state of emergency, freed political prisoners, and began negotiations over who would head the new government.

4/13/1919Jallianwala Baug massacre. The great Indian tragedy occured in Amritsar which claimed 389 lives and wounded 1,516 activitists fighting for Indian independence. Early in 1919, the Rowlatt Act (Black Act) was passed. This authorized the Government to imprison any person without any trial and conviction in a court of law. This furious act was under the guidence of cruel Brigedier General R. E. H. Dyer and his 50 men troop. Michael O' Dwyer was then the Governor of Punjab who naturally defended the action. This day is observed as Jallianwala Baug Day.
10/29/1964Priceless and irreplaceable gems, including the famed 'Star of India' of 563.35 carats and 2.5 inches in diameter, were stolen from the American Museum of Natural History, New York, USA, in a daring burglary. An alarm system was discontinued years ago as was the all-night guard in the gem hall, both for reasons of economy. The jewels were uninsured due to high-priced premiums. There were other jewels too that were also robbed during this time.
