India is declared a secular republic. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru (1947-1964) is determined to abolish casteism and industrialize the nation. Constitution makes Hindi official national language, English to continue for 15 years, 14 major state languages are recognized. India also moved a motion for no war treaty between India and Pakistan to improve the relations with neighboring countries.

1/26/1950	Government of India accepted the National Emblem. It consisted of Head of Lion which is taken from Ashok piller situated near Sarnath.
9/29/1914	Japanese vessel 'Kamagata Maru' reached Baj Baj near Calcutta from Vancouver carrying Indian revolutionaries.
3/30/1949	New Union of Greater Rajasthan was ceremonially inaugurated by Patel when the existing Union of Rajasthan was joined by four premier states of Bikaner, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. Hiralal Shastri became its first Chief Minister.
2/14/1959	Nehru tells the International Conference on Planned Parenthood that Indian family planning efforts have not stopped population growth.
